Skype is shutting down today

After more than two decades of service, Skype has officially reached the end of its journey. Microsoft has confirmed the retirement of the iconic communication platform, encouraging users to migrate to Microsoft Teams (free). Existing Skype users can transition seamlessly, with their login credentials, contacts, and chat history automatically transferring to the new platform.

Users will still have the option to export their Skype data until January 2026. After that date, all data associated with Skype accounts will be permanently deleted.

Microsoft explained the decision as part of its strategy to “streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs.” While Microsoft Teams (free) offers a modern communication experience, it comes with certain limitations compared to Skype. Group video calls on Teams are capped at 60 minutes, and popular Skype features like pay-as-you-go calling and SMS with Skype Credit are not supported.

Skype, which launched in 2003 and was acquired by Microsoft in 2011, played a pivotal role in shaping the voice over IP (VoIP) landscape. It became a household name for video calling and online communication, connecting millions of users across the globe.

As Skype bows out, Microsoft Teams aims to carry forward the legacy of online collaboration and connectivity in a more integrated digital environment.
