OpenAI Faces Delays as ChatGPT’s Image-Generation Feature Surges in Popularity

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on X that the overwhelming demand for the company's new image-generation tool in ChatGPT is causing product delays and performance issues.

“We are getting things under control, but you should expect new releases from OpenAI to be delayed, stuff to break, and for service to sometimes be slow as we deal with capacity challenges,” Altman stated, adding that the team is working tirelessly to stabilize operations.

The image-generation feature, praised for its ability to replicate artistic styles like Studio Ghibli’s hand-drawn animation, has driven unprecedented growth. Over the weekend, Altman noted that OpenAI has struggled to keep up, with staff working late nights to maintain service.

On Monday alone, ChatGPT gained a million new users, bringing its total to 500 million weekly users and 20 million paying subscribers—an increase from 300 million users and 15.5 million subscribers at the end of 2024.

To manage server capacity, OpenAI has delayed the rollout of image-generation for free ChatGPT users and temporarily paused video generation for new users of Sora, the company’s generative AI media suite.
