Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) has filed a lawsuit against the Indian government, accusing its IT ministry of unlawfully expanding its powers to censor online content. According to Reuters, X claims that the government has created an unauthorized mechanism allowing numerous officials to order content takedowns without proper oversight.
X argues this system violates India’s legal safeguards, which restrict content removal to cases involving sovereignty, public order, and top-level approval. The company previously complied with takedown orders, fearing penalties, but is now escalating its opposition through fresh litigation.
A Karnataka High Court hearing was held earlier this month, with another session expected next week. X seeks to legally invalidate the directive and challenge what it calls “unrestrained censorship” in India.
