Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously stated that selling access to Llama AI models isn’t Meta’s business model, but a newly unredacted court filing reveals that Meta earns revenue through agreements with companies hosting Llama models. While it’s unclear which partners pay Meta, listed hosts include AWS, Nvidia, Google Cloud, and others.
Zuckerberg previously hinted at licensing deals, and Meta uses Llama models across its products, benefiting from community-driven improvements. However, this revenue connection is significant in the Kadrey v. Meta lawsuit, where Meta is accused of training Llama on pirated e-books and facilitating infringement via torrenting.
As Meta increases AI investments—planning $60B-$80B in CapEx for 2025—it is reportedly considering a Meta AI subscription service to help offset costs.
